School
Becky earned an undergraduate degree in 2003
at Eastern Washington University in Applied Developmental Psychology
with an
emphasis in pre-counseling. With ambitions of going to graduate
school out of state, Becky decided to go to the University of Nevada in
Reno (UNR). She earned a Masters degree in Counseling with an emphasis
in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2005. She then began the doctorate
program at UNR a few weeks later. During her first doctoral semester,
Becky gave birth to Porter and shortly after lost her mother to
leukemia. A year later while Becky was in the midst of developing her
dissertation proposal Porter (age 2) died suddenly. She took a semester
off to grieve yet again. In the spring of 2010 Becky finally earned her PhD in
Counseling with an emphasis in Counselor Education and Supervision. This
degree sets her up for a career in higher education as a professor or a
clinical supervisor. Becky's
dissertation is about professional support with bereaved parents
entitled: A phenomenological study of the
professional support requirements and grief interventions to parents
bereaved by an unexplained death at different time periods in the grief
process under the advisement of Dr. Livia D'Andrea. This was a qualitative study and included interviews with 14
professionals and 6 bereaved parents about support they either provided
or received after the sudden and unexplained death of a child. The study
also explored the experiences of these individuals. The information
will be used to inform those who assist after the sudden and unexplained
death of a child. Becky hopes to begin publishing articles in
peer-reviewed journals soon.
Work
Becky is a licensed Marriage and Family
Therapy and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor
License in Washington. She is also a Nationally Certified Counselor and
Registered Play Therapist. Becky has worked a variety of jobs since
graduating with a masters degree. She was the first employee at Alliance
Family Services and was given the position of Clinical Supervisor.
Alliance Family Services grew to over 30 employees and 100 clients in
the first year. The hectic schedule and long hours was not conducive to
family and school life, so Becky started her own practice in Reno.
She did contract work with Eating Recovery and Wellness Center
specializing in eating disorder therapy. On top of all this,
Becky was a graduate teaching assistant for Dr. Marlowe Smaby. She
assisted with teaching and research which proved to be a great experience. After
waiting for the perfect job to open up in Spokane, Becky was offered a
job at Spokane Mental Health as a Child and Family Therapist. She
absolutely loves her job and her co-workers. So far it proves to be a
very wonderful experience. In 2011 Becky began helping with a research
project through the Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood Program. The
research is geared towards developing guidelines for medical examiners
and medical death investigators on how to compassionately investigate
SIDS and SUDC deaths. Upon completion of the study a conference for
professionals will be held where these guidelines will be outlined.
Play
Becky had been actively involved in the
Nevada Association for Play Therapy (NVAPT).
She was a member of the board for over 3 years and was elected
President for the 2007/2008 year. During her term the association won
the Gold Brach Award for increasing membership and promoting play
therapy in Nevada. She went to the 2007 conference in Hollywood
California to accept the award on behalf of NVAPT for the second highest
membership increase in the world. Becky stayed right on Hollywood
Boulevard in a very fancy (and expensive hotel) where the Academy Awards
are held. While she spent most of the day in seminars, she was able to
get away to visit the Grunman's Theater, Hollywood Walk of Fame,
Hollywood Stars Tour. She didn't see any big stars, but certainly had a
good time. In 2011 Becky became a board member of the Washington
Association for Play Therapy and hopes to build support and awareness in
the Spokane region.
In
2006, after 26 years of dreaming, Becky finally went to
Disneyland. Even more amazing it was unplanned. Then again, who wouldn't
just plan random trips to the happiest place on Earth? Becky's friend Lesa invited Becky to go along with her family. It was a short trip (one
weekend), but they were able to see Disneyland, California Adventures
and Universal Studios. It was very fun and entertaining. While Becky was off
battling pirates and hanging out with Mickey the Mouse Mike was at home
bonding with Porter. It was a great weekend for all of us.
