Porter's Legacy

Porter's Life

Porter Matthew Rudd was born on March 4, 2006 at 3:12pm at Saint Mary's Medical Center in Reno Nevada. It was a relatively short labor that started only after my water broke shortly around midnight on March 4th. We were both so happy and excited to welcome Porter into the world. Porter was a healthy baby boy with the most beautiful red hair and blue eyes. Porter first smiled when he was only a month old and never stopped. Whenever someone smiled at him he would give a toothless smile right back. We were able to catch his first giggle on tape. Porter was only two months old! He was so curious about his surroundings. Porter was one of those children who seemed frustrated that he couldn't walk or crawl at an early age. From the age of three months Porter loved holding on to someone's fingers as he walked around. He was able to explore the world a bit faster that way, not to mention chase the cat at what comparably seemed lightening-speed.

Porter absolutely loved being with his mom and dad. It was obvious that Porter was an extrovert right from the start. He couldn't seem to get enough play time with anyone who pick up a block or toy. He was one of those kids who would smile at anyone in the store who looked at him. He wasn't the least bit shy and would smile right back. People who would have never stopped to talk to us always took the time to stop and tell us how adorable Porter was. We would even get compliments on airplanes about how cute, adorable and well-behaved Porter was.

Porter first word, was of course, "duck." He would happily point to any yellow thing and promptly say "duck." He then moved from there to animal sounds. His first sound was the most adorable "meoooowww," and then moved on to "woof," "baahhh," and "moooo." He could point out the specific animals and make their corresponding noise. Once Porter started talking he just never stopped. Our house was ALWAYS full of noises, squeals, giggles and laughter. From the moment Porter got up in the morning to the moment Porter went to sleep each night he was a bustle of activity.

Although Porter was a bit colicky as a baby, he quickly grew out of it and slept through the night after eating solid foods. We began the nightly routine of bath time with Daddy. The two would play with ducks, balls and other bath toys. Mike always looked forward to his one-on-one time with Porter each night. After the bath, Porter would get dressed in his PJ's and then Becky would read him a story each night. Porter was very particular about the stories he liked from even a very young age. He would often sit quickly and intently if he enjoyed the story, and would fuss or flip through the pages if he did not. Each night after story time Porter would fall asleep to the Nursery Song CD that his grandma Kathy made for the grandkids. By the end of the CD porter was usually sleeping peacefully. There wasn't a night that went by, since Porter was two months old, that he didn't fall asleep to that CD.

There hasn't been a day, or minute, that has gone by that we have not thought of Porter. He was truly the center of our universe.
